Індійський рис басматі — ароматний рис, але його аромат і смак відрізняються від інших ароматних видів рису. Деякі описують цей аромат як аромат попкорну. Цей рис коштує дорожче за всі види рису у світі. Басматі має високий вміст амілази та твердо-суху текстуру. Зерно довге і тонке, як південний довгозернистий рис, тільки дещо менше.
