New Year's Vasilópita (which means "bread of Saint Basil") is a round bread that has the new year's numbers made of dough on its surface and contains a hidden coin. The bread is cut on New Year's Eve at midnight or on New Year's Day and the recipient of the piece which contains the hidden coin will have good luck and blessings for the New Year. Vasilópita is a sweet yeast bread that, like many yeast breads, requires two risings. Traditionally flavored with mahlepi and mastica, this bread is delicious plain or toasted with butter.
