The Aronia, called by us also chokeberry, is a discovered in the 20th century cross of rowan and medlar, originally from eastern North America. The famous Russian botanist and world travelers Michurin discovered the Aronia in America and brought them for breeding purposes with Russia. The Russian fruit breeders and biologists managed to breed a frost resistant, unique fruit. The waxy coated, black, about 5-12 mm small fruits grow on a shrub and can be harvested in the months of August to October. The taste of aronia is very similar to that of the blueberry. However, the slightly tart flavor is subject to a sweet-sour taste and stings so unlike other fruits especially apparent. The berries are not edible in its original form. Only dried or through a special process of Dampfentsaftens they can be consumed. Whether as fruit juice or fruit jams, the Aronia is growing in popularity due to its taste.
