Good to know: Kiwi
Kiwi looks shy on the outside, all that dull brown fuzz, but don't let that fool you. Leave it in the fridge and it holds for days without fuss. Leave it on the counter and it comes round in its own time — give it a sniff, and when it starts to smell fragrant and sweet, you're close. Press it gently near the stem end. Hard as a pebble means it's not there yet. A slight give under your thumb and a little perfume in the air means it's ready. Squishy, almost collapsing when you press, means you've waited too long and the flesh has gone to mush.
Some people say you should always peel a kiwi. No! That skin is fine to eat — it's just fuzzy, not harmful. Peel it anyway and you throw away flesh along with the skin, and with a fruit this small, that's a real waste.
One kiwi weighs about 75 grams. Per 100 grams it gives you roughly 65 kilocalories, mostly carbs, barely any fat. Light food, and an easy one to eat whole, skin and all.
